Intuitive Eating Therapy
Hi, my name is Keri, and I’m an Intuitive Eating therapist in Tampa, FL who can help you work on your relationship with food.
You have been out of touch with your natural instincts for so long that you are not sure how to get back. You feel unhappy with your body and feel stuck.
You may be experiencing some (or all!) of the following:
You are so used to following on a diet plan that you have no idea how to make independent choices for yourself
You can’t remember the last time you ate something because it’s what you wanted vs what you were “supposed to” have
You worry that you might gain weight if you stop the diet cycle
You are afraid that if you let yourself have what you want, that you will never stop eating
And most importantly….
You recognize that none of the above is actually working and you want something different (even if you don’t know what that is)
The culture that we live in promotes an unhealthy obsession with micro-managing our body. It directly teaches us that we cannot trust our internal cues, and tells us that the next diet plan or lifestyle change is the key to “fixing” what is wrong with us. The good news is that there is nothing wrong with you and you absolutely can get back to a place of trusting your body. That doesn’t mean that it is going to be perfect (because that does not exist) or easy (because the culture we live in loves to tell us that we can’t trust ourselves), but I can say with 100% certainty that it is worth it.
I’m also here to tell you that your body doesn’t need to be fixed. What you may need is some guidance on how to get back in touch with what your individual body needs. You can live a life free from food and body obsession and be able to focus on what truly matters to you. As I Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor in Tampa, I can help guide you in a way that feels right for you and your body.
What exactly is Intuitive Eating?
The book Intuitive Eating, written by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, talks about 10 principles:
1. Reject the diet mentality
2. Honor your hunger
3. Make peace with food
4. Challenge the food police
5. Discover the satisfaction factor
6. Feel your fullness
7. Cope with your emotions with kindness
8. Respect your body
9. Movement - feel the difference
10. Honor your health - gentle nutrition
Intuitive Eating presents a whole new way of looking at our relationship with our food, our bodies and diet culture. The truth is that many people need extra help to take the next steps that are unique to them. Many clients that I work with have experienced trauma around food and their bodies that can be explored in the therapeutic setting (ie I can help you you talk through and process this stuff without you needing to do it on your own).
It is also important to note that Intuitive Eating is NOT the hunger/fullness diet (a common pitfall that new IE-ers might run into). Working with a therapist while exploring this is a great way to ensure you aren’t falling into this space of this being another “plan to follow.”
Intuitive Eating Therapy in Florida
The first step in this process is finding someone you can trust to hold space for you during this process. I feel very strongly that we first need to make sure we connect and that you will feel comfortable working together. I recommend reaching out so we can do just that – connect and make a plan. If you have been suffering from chronic dieting or disordered eating for a significant amount of time, we will work together to unpack your story.
Once we decide to work together, we will meet in person in my Tampa, FL office or virtually. We typically begin by developing that trusting partnership and figuring out what your goals are. You will tell your story at a pace that feels right for you and I will be there to support you every step of the way. Many of my clients can feel very vulnerable talking about these topics which is 100% normal and to be expected. This is why you come and see me – so you don’t need to deal with emotions that may arise on your own.
It is also important for you to know that I have lived experience in these areas. I was also stuck in a cycle of chronic dieting for more years than I would like to count. I struggled and fought to break this cycle, and feel an immense amount of joy helping others do the same. I will not take you farther than I have gone myself. In addition to my lived experience and Clinical Social Work training, I am also a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. If we work together we will utilize a HAES (Health at Every Size), anti-diet, social justice oriented and fat-positive approach to working through your relationship to food and your body.
Things I won’t do while we work together
Tell you that I am the expert (you are the expert of your own body and story)
Tell you that you need to lose weight
Judge you or your story (believe me – nothing you can say will surprise me)
Decide how fast we need to go
